The Bow River, 623 km in length, flows through Banff National Park, one of the most famous and most visited nature reserves in the world. It forms the heart of the city of Calgary, home to one million people and the commercial and cultural centre of southern Alberta.

Prince's Island Park, a large green space in downtown Calgary, is linked to three bridges to Eau Claire and is set on an island in the Bow River. It is part of the pathway and hiking trail system lining both sides of the Bow River. The park is adjacent to Eau Claire Market and many visitors make a joint visit to the market and park. The park offers walking and biking areas, as well as outdoor concerts and plays during the summer months.
